How do I become an officer in the merchant navy as a GP rating course in India?
1st you need to understand there a re two types of COCs, one is the NCV (near coastal voyage) and 2nd is the FG(Foreign Going).Foreign going means the license is valid for sailing all over the world and NCV means ,the license is valid only for coastal areas.

For Ratings ,foreign going COC cannot be directly applied and they have to 1st clear their 2nd mate (NCV) and then they can appear for their 2nd mates FG COC.

Lot of ratings go to UK where after 36 months of sea time, one can directly appear for 2nd mates FG.

All the best!!
